Campaign on King George Island 2017

Early November 2016, José Jorquera and Braulio Valdevenito from the University of Santiago arrived to King George island (62° 12’ S; 58° 57’ W, Antarctic Peninsula) beginning the campaign 2016-2017 of measurements at the Antarctic Research Platform (TARP-02) of the University of Santiago. These two researchers remained in Antarctica until mid-December when they were replaced by another team of two researchers (Nicole Torres and Andrea Sepulveda). Penny Rowe and Edgardo Sepulveda worked on King George Island from mid January to mid February when they were replaced by Sarah Feron, Raul Cordero and Juan Alfonso (from the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas, IVIC). The USACH-led campaign in Antarctica lasted until early March 2017 and involved a total of 11 researchers from the University of Santiago, the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas (IVIC), and the Leuphana University (Germany). TARP-02 is attached to the Escudero Station (Chilean Antarctic Institute – INACH) and was deployed early 2015. The platform is fitted with state-of-the-art instruments aimed at measurements of the solar spectrum. These measurements allow us to retrieve the total ozone column (TOC), the aerosol optical depth (AOD), the precipitable water (PW), and the cloud modification factor (CMF). These measurements are part of our efforts to study the Southern Hemisphere Climate System Response to Stratospheric Ozone Depletion. See the Photo Book of the campaign.
