Black Carbon 2016

Sampling Snow from Valle Nevado (33° S),
to Volcan Osorno  (41° S)

Led by Raul R. Cordero (Universidad de Santiago), Jaime Pizarro (Universidad de Santiago), Francisco Fernandoy (Universidad Andres Bello), Fabrice Lambert (Universidad Catolica), and Gino Casassa (Universidad de Magallanes), an interdisciplinary team conducted in August-September 2016 a campaign aimed at sampling Black Carbon (BC) and other light-absorbing impurities in the snow across a north-south transect of the Chilean Andes (from Valle Nevado 33° S, to Volcan Osorno 41° S). This campaign was conducted in the frame of a CONICYT-funded “Team Research Project” (Anillo) Preis ACT-1410, which aims to deliver a map of the BC content in the Andean cryosphere, highlighting impacted zones (useful for further studies on the effects of BC on glacier melting). Led by Steven Neshyba (University of Puget Sound, PS) and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Universidad de Santiago (Preis 041331CC_DAS), a similar campaign was conducted in July 2015 from Putre 18° S to Cajon del Maipo 33° S.
